When Mary Victoria Leiter Curzon , wife of the then Viceroy of India , Lord Kurzon , visited the area in 1904 , she failed to see a single Rhinocerous , for which the area was acclaimed for. Dismayed with this , She persuaded her husband to take urgent measures to save these endangered species. As a result , one 1st of June 1905 , he Kaziranga Proposed Reserve Forest was created with an area of 232 km2.Kaziranga was designated a reserve forest in 1908.From 1916 to 1938 it remained game sanctuary. However after that hunting was inhibited and visitors were allowed to enter the park. In 1950 , P.D Stracey , the then forest conservationist renamed the Kaziranga game sanctuary as Kaziranga wild life sanctuary inorder to get rid of the name of hunting connotations. The state Government passed "The Assam National Park act of 1968 " fourteen years later assigning Kaziranga the title of a national park.In the year 1985 , UNESCO declared Kaziranga as a world heritage site for its suigeneris natural environment.
